Who is Silenus?

Silenus was the teacher and faithful companion of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine. Pictured in Greek mythology as a plump, jovial old man with pointed ears, thick lips and a squat little nose, Silenus is the perfect example of a man whose outward appearance belies his inner wisdom.

Silenus, son of Hermes, being exceptionally wise and gentle was chosen as the foster father to Dionysus, known as Bacchus to the Romans. Silenus was described as the eldest and wisest of the followers of Dionysus, and was said to be the young god’s tutor and was entrusted with his education.

Silenus was present when Dionysus wed Ariadne and thereafter merry Silenus rode a donkey in all Bacchanal processions. He represents the ideal father and the best and dearest of the fathers you love.

This faithful companion and tutor of Dionysus, was a wise and gentle soul bestowed with profound knowledge and the power of prophecy by the mere act of sipping his revered wine. In fact, so eager to learn from Silenus was King Midas that he visited a fountain from which Silenus often drank and laced it with wine. As an intoxicated Silenus slept, the mighty king’s servants faithfully delivered him to their master. For five days Silenus entertained King Midas and his court with brilliant tales while a distraught Dionysus searched for his beloved mentor. Upon discovering Silenus under the care of King Midas, Dionysus was so happy that he bestowed Midas with a gift. He granted the old king one wish. And so it was that King Midas gained his golden touch!

In honor of Silenus, Silenus Vintners brings to you the perfect blend of fine artisan wineries and camaraderie.
