The Love of Wine
What is today Silenus Vintners began in 1967 as a walnut orchard. The orchard was converted to Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards and the grapes sold to Robert Mondavi, Inglenook and Clos du Val. After discovering that the grapes ended up in the various wineries’ reserve wines, the Newlan Winery was born with their first release in 1980. The winery was the 35th winery in Napa Valley, and quickly became recognized for its red wines, winning awards both internationally and domestically.
From 1999 the Sato and Newlan families merged to create Koves-Newlan Vineyards and Winery. The families merged with common goals and a commitment to carry on the tradition of handcrafted, small production wines with a focus on high-quality estate wines.
Silenus Vintners was created in 2006 when the Williamson family purchased the property, added a new tasting room and state of the art crush equipment, and opened the facility up to allow other winemakers and vineyard owners a space in which to craft and share their wines.
As of the middle of 2010, Silenus Vintners is the first Napa Winery to be acquired by a Chinese-American company, Silenus International Group. The company is simultaneously working to create a winery in Mainland China and plans to sell those wines along with premium Napa wines throughout China. Silenus Vintners will continue to provide various winemakers the ability to create and sell their wines while also crafting our own brand for sale at the winery as well as in the U.S. and China.
